At Morning Prayer on Sunday we sang the theme tune for the BBC comedy show The Vicar of Dibley.
Those familiar with the show will be familiar with the setting of Psalm 23 – The Lord if my Shephard – set by the composer Howard Goodall. For the TV show it was performed by the choir of Christ Church Cathedral Oxford, with a boy chorister singing the opening solo.
Thankfully Howard Goodall released the piece for other choirs to enjoy singing. And it really is a joy to perform – not just because of the fun memories of the TV show – but because it’s also a lovely setting of Psalm 23.
Anyway, so on Sunday our director of music came up and asked me if I would sing the solo. In the music it’s set for a treble/soprano voice to sing, not a tenor, but I was happy to give it a go – albeit an octave down – I don’t think anyone would have enjoyed my forced falsetto!
Thankfully the live-stream of the service failed on Sunday, so nobody has to relive my efforts. Instead, take a listen to choir of Wells Cathedral:
